D'Arcy Kavanagh; Author, Musician

Speaker: Mr. D'Arcy Kavanagh

Topic: Paul Burke Murder Mystery Series

Background:

Lethbridge author D’Arcy Kavanagh has just released the fifth instalment of his Paul Burke mystery series, called “Silenced in Spain,” which follows Burke to a new area where he lands himself in a twisted murder.

The novel is set in Spain where Burke, an ex-pro cyclist originally from Montreal, has a job commentating on a stage of the country’s greatest bike race, the Vuelta a Espana.

When he and a colleague go out on a reconnaissance ride to prepare for the day, they split up, and hours later the police tell Burke that his colleague has been killed in a car accident.

When Burke hears the details, he has doubts and starts his own investigation, quickly putting himself in the middle of an international crime ring.

“They all stand alone, but all the characters change, the lead character Burke is different in the fifth book to who he was in the first book,” says Kavanagh. “It is about a guy who is growing more curious and intrigued every year and finding himself in murderous situations. He is able to see things others can’t and he is able to figure out what might be happening.”

Kavanagh is inspired by the places he has travelled to create the world of his murder mysteries, spending months at a time in places to understand the feel of the local environment, food and culture.

“When I write the books, I write about an area which I am very familiar with. In ‘Silenced in Spain,’ it’s the coastal region just west of Barcelona and just northeast of it.
