Don Robb; Songs of Hope Society

Speaker: Don Robb

Topic: CancerBlasts Concert

CancerBlasts  is the inaugural fund-raising concert for the newly formed Songs of Hope Society. It will beheld on April 13th at Southminster Church.

This is no ordinary concert. CancerBlast is for all of us who have been touched by cancer to join in tribute to those who are fighting, recovering or who have been lost to the disease.

A great headliner of trumpeter, Jens Lindemann has been secured. Jens is hailed as one of the most celebrated soloists in his instrument’s history and was recently named “International Brass Personality of the Year” (Brass Herald). He played lead trumpet with the Canadian Brass, has appeared internationally as an orchestral soloist and has won major awards ranging from Grammy and Juno nominations to winning the prestigious Echo Klassik in Germany. He will also be joined by Anna McBryan, local vocalist and the Bridge Brass Quintet.

The ‘Songs for Hope’ Society believes that music is a strong catalyst for hope. All funds raised will go directly to the incredible (and underfunded) research being done at the University of Lethbridge.

Our specific project, ‘Cancer, Chemotherapy and the Brain’, is lead by Bryan Kolb and Olga Kovalchuk.

Chemo brain, affects up to 75% of cancer patients, with higher rates among children, young adults and patients who receive high-dose chemotherapy. This newly developing area of research is working to design novel strategies to prevent and mitigate chemo brain. These strategies would significantly improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.
